Target Audience

Primary care professionals (internists, family physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and any other primary care clinicians) prescribing psychotropic medications to their patients.

Description

As many as 4 out of 5 prescriptions for psychotropic medications in the US are written by primary care practitioners (PCPs). Psychotropic medications have a relatively high rate of adverse side effects and are sometimes a source of claims for medical malpractice. Clinical practice guidelines can assist PCPs as they define their policies on mental health screening, decide what medications and conditions they will manage, establish when they will refer to a psychiatrist, and determine how to advise and monitor patients. This activity provides strategies for reducing professional liability risks associated with prescribing psychotropic medications. 

Learning Outcomes/Objectives

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  1. Access a clinical practice guideline that can assist you in establishing a policy for your practice for prescribing psychotropic medications.
  2. Describe and defend a policy on depression screening appropriate to your practice.
  3. Write a brief note in the medical record recording your conversation with a patient about initiating treatment with a psychotropic medication.
  4. Develop a policy on what psychiatric conditions you will manage and when you will refer to a psychiatrist.
